The study of urban solids and voids. The Vertical Urbanism will be a street extends into the building.
Public Open Space and Public Education Programs are the key elements of this project. This gave me the opportunity to combine these two elements into one program: A Public Science Museum that will play a dominant role in this project. It provides a subset of additional programs, such as a tropical forest, hydrology center, and planetarium. This Cultural Institute will be a combination of the California Academy of Sciences and the Exploratorium.
I studied the behavior of voids to understand the relationship between the gap spaces defined by the existing adjacent volumes and primary axis. The different behaviors of the void can be categorized in three conditions; at rest, intermediate/active, and interactive. Intermediate/active, and interactive can be seen as Urban Rooms. Voids are framed by the office, or laboratory and primary circulation axes. These axes will frame the circulation between the three types of voids. The “at rest” condition differentiates itself by providing small and compact spaces that fit the needs of the client’s required programs. These voids might be individual, compact lounge spaces, or presentation spaces enclosed by office zones.
